چکیده

The authors are to be congratulated for a systematic investigation of the accurate and non subjective classifying approach in seismic research. The authors have conducted several clustering algorithms to the seismic event records from Volcanological and Seismological Observatory at Manizales. Their objective was to improve the grouping of seismic data (i.e., volcano-tectonic earthquakes, long-period earthquakes and icequakes) digitized at 100.16Hz sampling frequency. Their study seems adding new approach to their previouswork of Langer et al. (2006) who applied different classificationtechniques to seismic data.

Spectral Characterization of Volcanic Earthquakes at Nevado del Ruiz Volcano Using Spectral Band Selection/Extraction Techniques

Spectral content of seismic signals contains essential information for discriminating different classes of volcanic earthquakes. Such an information is largely redundant; therefore, a reduce number of spectral regions may provide almost the same description of the original events. By reducing the number of bands considered, the amount of data to be processed is significantly decreased and the i...

The DTW-based representation space for seismic pattern classification

Distinguishing among the different seismic volcanic patterns is still one of the most important and laborintensive tasks for volcano monitoring. This task could be lightened and made free from subjective bias by using automatic classification techniques. In this context, a core but often overlooked issue is the choice of an appropriate representation of the data to be classified. Recently, it h...

A Comparison between Time-Frequency and Cepstral Feature Representations for the Classification of Seismic-Volcanic Signals

The analysis and classification of seismic patterns, which are typically registered as digital signals, can be used to monitor and understand the underlying geophysical phenomena beneath the volcanoes. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the development of automated systems for labeling those signals according to a number of pre-defined volcanic, tectonic and environmental...

The Dissimilarity Representation as a Tool for Three-Way Data Classification: A 2D Measure

The dissimilarity representation has demonstrated advantages in the solution of classification problems. Meanwhile, the representation of objects by multi-dimensional arrays is necessary in many research areas. However, the development of proper classification tools that take the multi-way structure into account is incipient. This paper introduces the use of the dissimilarity representation as ...

Generalizing Dissimilarity Representations Using Feature Lines

A crucial issue in dissimilarity-based classification is the choice of the representation set. In the small sample case, classifiers capable of a good generalization and the injection or addition of extra information allow to overcome the representational limitations. In this paper, we present a new approach for enriching dissimilarity representations. It is based on the concept of feature line...
